A South Carolina woman is sharing her story after three robbers allegedly confronted her at gunpoint, kidnapped her, and threatened her with sexual assault. But it wasn’t deputies who saved her. She said she jumped out of a moving car, sustaining only minor injuries.

The woman, identified only as Jordan, talked about it at a press conference Thursday at the side of Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott.

“I thought back to my mom,” she said. “She was almost a victim of sexual assault when she was in college and she fought back and fought the man off, and I thought that I am going to be strong like my mom, and I’m going to get myself out of this.”

It all happened early Wednesday morning, she said. Three armed robbers confronted her after she returned to her apartment from work, threatening to shoot her if she didn’t stop screaming. Eventually, one of the perps ran off, but the other two brought her to her car, forcing her to drive since it was a stick shift, and they didn’t know how to handle it.

“I was asking them, “Why I can’t just leave?'” she said. “‘Why can’t you just leave me here?'” They needed her to get money from an ATM, she said, but on the drive there, they threatened her with sexual assault, so she decided to escaped.

Her method: Jumping out of the moving car.

“I threw it in to neutral and just opened the door and fell out,” she said.

Lott said at the press conference that the robbers were behind a spree of robberies in the area throughout July. They allegedly targeted only white victims, and even apologized to one black victim. Two suspects, a 15- and 17-year-old, have been arrested. The sheriff’s office is still investigating.
