Senate Dem Worries About ‘Extremism’ While Calling SCOTUS Justices ‘Horsemen of the Apocalypse’

On a day when the Supreme Court took action regarding President Donald Trump‘s travel ban, one Democratic Senator felt the need to speak out against what the Court didn’t do, and in creative fashion. In its decision to hear a case challenging Trump’s executive order, the Court ruled that for now, portions of the ban shall stay in place regarding people with no existing ties to the United States, but not for those with U.S. connections.

In an appearance on MSNBC on Monday, Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono expressed disappointment regarding the status of the case. “It’s still a Muslim ban,” Hirono said, before turning her attention to the partial dissent by Justices Clarence ThomasNeil Gorsuch, and Samuel Alito, the most conservative justices on the Court, who wrote that the block of the travel ban should have been lifted in its entirety. Hirono criticized the justice’s belief that the travel ban should continue to be enforced in full while the case is being litigated. Hirono didn’t shy away from expressing how she feels about the ban, or those justices, for that matter.

“This is like the three horseman of the apocalypse, and they’re waiting for the fourth one to come along,” Hirono said without a hint of irony, characterizing the jurists as figures that commonly refer to war, famine, pestilence, and death, while in the same breath expressing concern over ‘extremism.’

Hirono pointed out, as if it wasn’t clear, that she did not support Gorsuch’s appointment to the Supreme Court.
