Student Threatened With Legal Action After Recording Anti-Trump Lecture

A student who surreptitiously recorded Professor Olga Perez Stable Cox calling Donald Trump’s victory an “act of terrorism” might face legal action, according to one teacher’s union. The Orange Coast College Republicans, a local student group, published the video to Facebook on Monday, and the Coast Federation of Educators replied to the post.

“This video violates the Coast District student code of conduct and California Education code,” they wrote. “The student(s) involved will be facing discipline.”

The California Education Code Section 78907 goes like this:

The use by any person, including a student, of any electronic listening or recording device in any classroom without the prior consent of the instructor is prohibited, except as necessary to provide reasonable auxiliary aids and academic adjustments to disabled students. Any person, other than a student, who willfully violates this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

Any student violating this section shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary action.

We’ve reached out to the union for more information about the kind of legal action they’re talking about.

You can see the YouTube version of the video below. WATCH:

“Our nation is divided,” Cox said early on. “We have been assaulted. It’s an act of terrorism. One of the most frightening things for me and most people in my life is that the people creating the assault are among us.”

She declined to clarify her lecture to HuffPo, saying “I don’t have time right now.”

The OCC Republicans criticized the lecture, describing it with snark: “Did you know you’re a terrorist for having supported Trump? I didn’t but apparently that’s what they’re teaching in Orange Coast Colleges classrooms post election.”

We reached out to them for more information. They wouldn’t confirm if the student was affiliated with their group, but did issue a statement.

“The union has invoked both California Education Code and the Coast Community College District Student Code of Conduct in a public manner as a scare tactic to silence the student who shot the footage,” they wrote. “We know this as a union scare tactic due to the fact a complaint could have been filed without the statements from the official Facebook page being placed in the comment section, on the OCC Republicans public page, in a manner which showed a desire to hunt down the anonymous student to punish them for having caught the statements on video.”
